Vijayawada: The number of wards in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has been increased from 64 to 86, while the Machilipatnam Municipal Corporation will now have 60 wards against the existing 50, as part of the delimitation exercise ahead of the upcoming urban local body elections. The Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department has issued a Gazette notification finalising the delimitation of wards in the two municipal corporations. The notification also specifies the boundaries of the newly delimited wards.
The delimitation exercise was taken up in accordance with Rule 8 of the Andhra Pradesh Municipal Corporation (Delimitation of Wards) Rules, 1996, issued through GO Ms No 570 dated November 6, 1996, read with GO Ms No 65 dated March 24, 2026. Earlier, objections and suggestions from residents of Vijayawada and Machilipatnam were invited through a preliminary notification issued on September 5, 2026. Following the prescribed procedure, the department has now issued the final Gazette notification on the delimitation of wards.
According to the notification, the boundaries of all the wards have also been specified. According to the final gazette on delimitation, the number of divisions under the Vijayawada West Assembly constituency will increase from 22 to 28. VMC Circle-I will comprise divisions 31 to 58 under the Vijayawada West constituency, with boundary limits modified in some areas. Similarly, the Vijayawada Central Assembly constituency has been restructured to include divisions 1 and 59 to 86, taking the total number of divisions under VMC Circle-II to 29. In the Vijayawada East Assembly constituency, the number of divisions will rise to 29. Divisions 2 to 30 will come under the constituency after the delimitation and will form VMC Circle-III.
The government has also issued Gazette notifications relating to ward delimitation in other municipalities in NTR district, including Jaggaiahpet, Nandigama, Tiruvuru and Kondapalli, and in Krishna district, including Vuyyuru, Gudivada and Pedana. The delimitation exercise is expected to pave the way for the conduct of elections to urban localbodies in the State.
