Vijayawada: Women residents of Nunna in Vijayawada Rural mandal staged a protest on Thursday night against the establishment of a liquor shop amid residential buildings, alleging that it had been opened without obtaining permission from the gram panchayat and other concerned departments.
The liquor shop was set up in a building beside Maheshwari Heights apartment complex on the Nunna-Gunadala Road by a person from Vijayawada city.
The women alleged that the shop owner, who had obtained a provisional licence in the recent liquor auction, had started operations without securing the necessary local permissions.
According to local residents, the building houses three shops, with one being used for liquor sales and the other two providing seating facilities for customers to consume liquor.
They also alleged that bar-like arrangements had been made at the rear of the building and urged officials to verify whether the required permissions had been obtained.Following the protest, Nunna Rural police reached the spot and enquired about the liquor shop’s licence and gram panchayat permissions. They asked the owner to close the outlet immediately, following which it was temporarily shut.
The women warned that they would launch a stronger protest if the shop reopened.
