Visakhapatnam: Marking the ‘National Mental Health Week’, the Government Hospital for Mental Care (GHMC) and the Visakha Psychiatric Society (VPS) are organising a host of awareness programmes, informed N Harikrishna, in-charge superintendent of Government Hospital for Mental Care, Visakhapatnam.

Speaking to the media on Monday, he stated that this year, special emphasis is being placed on creating awareness among the general public, especially the youth, and providing them with the support they need.

President of the Visakha Psychiatric Society, Mallika, stated that ‘World Mental Health Day’ is observed every year on October 10. With the theme focusing on ‘lived experiences heard: real voices, real change’, she informed that the programmes will be centred on this theme. Focusing on youth, several awareness programmes will be held in various colleges.

On October 6, G Suresh Kumar will conduct a Youth Mental Health Talk at Ambedkar Auditorium, Andhra University Engineering Campus. On Wednesday, mental health awareness sessions are planned at various degree colleges across the city. Competitions, including essay writing, elocution, debate, Rangoli, poster making and skits, are planned at the Government Hospital for Mental Care on October 8.

An interactive session with the Chairman of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) forms a part of the celebrations.

As part of the week-long celebrations, a special awareness programme was held on Monday at the Government Juvenile Home for Girls. Doctors from the Mental Care Hospital, including Sai Ram, Ammaji Rao and Rajeshwari, along with postgraduate students, participated in the programme.

Nihal, secretary of the Visakha Psychiatric Society, and other psychiatrists, also participated in the meeting.

The weeklong celebrations will conclude on October 10 (Saturday) where prizes will be distributed to the winners of various competitions held by GHMC and VPS.
