Visakhapatnam: Pfizer Healthcare India Private Limited expanded its focus toward rural women empowerment by onboarding over 50 girl students into the fifth batch of its ‘Pfizer autonomous teams’ (PATs) programme.

Collaborating with GITAM Deemed to be University, the company will offer training in a tailor-made three-year B.Sc. Chemistry degree programme.

To select the cohort, the company conducted an extensive screening process across north Andhra districts, interviewing roughly 500 women candidates with intermediate education backgrounds residing in 15 rural villages.

The initiative aims to increase women’s participation in the pharmaceutical workforce while developing local talent into future site leaders. The current batch has an average age of 19 years, with 77 percent of participants hailing from the local area.

Through this partnership over the last four years, around 350 women have joined Pfizer’s workforce via the PAT programme.

The institution’s Registrar D Gunasekharan noted that rising women enrollment in higher education combined with industrial platforms creates real opportunities for rural empowerment and economic growth. Pfizer Vizag PGS site lead Katta Ravi Chandar emphasised that the programme provides a unique learning model where students gain three years of comprehensive manufacturing experience while completing their degree.

Highlighting the programme’s structural framework, Ravi Kiran Teegala, director-people experience at Pfizer Global Supply India, detailed that the initiative relies on a scientific methodology involving diagnostic studies, a four-stage selection process, structured training, and holistic skill development to adapt to modern workplace demands.
