South Coast Railway has launched a comprehensive quality-assurance drive to ensure safe, potable water supply across stations
Visakhapatnam: South Coast Railway (SCoR) launched a comprehensive quality-assurance drive to ensure safe, potable water supply across railway stations, residential colonies and railway hospitals.
Conducted in accordance with the Indian Railways Medical Manual (IRMM), the monitoring initiative is spearheaded by a special team of inspectors and supervised by senior officers. To ensure safety at every stage of distribution, the zone instituted a three-tier testing and corrective protocol to carry out residual chlorine checks, bacteriological analysis and chemical analysis.
General Manager of the South Coast Railway Sandeep Mathur directed officers and field supervisors to maintain strict vigilance and conduct frequent, surprise inspections to ensure safe drinking water for passengers, residents, and rail users.
In a week-long drive, SCoR tested drinking water quality across four divisions, analysing 3,441 locations for residual chlorine, 211 samples for bacteriological safety, and 28 for chemical standards. All the samples passed the tests. However, relevant departments have been instructed to maintain strict vigilance.
While residual chlorine checks are tested daily at both source and supply points, bacteriological analysis is conducted monthly at major facilities and bi-monthly at minor locations. In the event of an unfit sample, reservoirs, pipelines and coolers undergo immediate deep cleaning and joint sanitary surveys with the engineering department until fresh samples pass inspection. As part of the chemical analysis, comprehensive testing is performed every six months on existing water sources and mandatorily for any new supply source to verify all chemical parameters remain well within permissible safety limits.
