Visakhapatnam: The Ratan Tata Innovation Hub (RTIH), Visakhapatnam, in collaboration with Satya Institute of Technology and Management (SITAM) in Vizianagaram organised a district-level ideathon ‘Rashtriya Innovation Challenge (RIC) 2026’.

The event saw participation of 365 students from colleges across the district. Of the 160 ideas considered, six promising innovations were shortlisted for the state-level competition.

The ideathon aimed to encourage students to identify real-world challenges and develop practical, technology-driven solutions for societal benefit. Participants presented ideas across five focus sectors: agriculture and farmers; health and sanitation; environment and waste management; digital government services; and youth livelihoods, skills and entrepreneurship.

Next, the selected teams will participate in the state-level competition scheduled for October 17 in Visakhapatnam, where prizes totaling Rs 50,000 will be awarded.

Vigneshwaran, head of the Artificial Intelligence Division at RTIH; K S Kumar, Head of Vinda Energy; and K. Suresh Kumar, programme coordinator at RTIH, attended as guests and resource persons for the event. They interacted with the participants, assessed their proposals and provided guidance on improving the feasibility, practical application and potential impact of their ideas. The programme offered students valuable exposure to problem-solving, critical thinking, teamwork and presentation skills.

Interaction with industry experts helped them understand how innovative concepts can be refined into practical solutions and potential prototypes. The initiative encouraged entrepreneurial thinking and motivated students to apply their academic knowledge to address pressing community needs. Encouraging students to absorb best practices, SITAM director Majji Sashibhushana Rao emphasised the importance of becoming innovators, problem-solvers and future entrepreneurs.
