Hanumakonda: Tension prevailed at the Telangana Social Welfare Girls Gurukul School in Palakurthi mandal of Jangaon district after 14 students were reportedly bitten by rats while sleeping in the hostel on Tuesday night. The affected students were taken to the Palakurthi Government Hospital on Wednesday, where they received treatment.Former minister Errabelli Dayakar Rao visited the Gurukul on Friday to meet the students and assess their condition. However, police and school staff stopped him at the gate, following which he staged a dharna along with BRS leaders.
Errabelli later spoke to the school principal and hostel warden and sought details about sanitation, safety and other facilities at the hostel. He questioned why the parents of the affected students were not informed immediately and demanded action against those responsible.
He alleged that sanitation conditions on the campus were poor and recalled an earlier incident in which a staff member was bitten by a snake.
Errabelli said he spoke to Social Welfare Schools Secretary Sharada over the phone and urged steps to prevent such incidents. He demanded that the government ensure basic facilities and safety for students.
