Journalists stage protest, demand apology from Wardhannapet MLA
Warangal: Journalists staged a protest at Pochamma Maidan junction here on Wednesday, condemning the burning of an effigy of a media organisation and demanding an apology from Wardhannapet MLA K R Nagaraju.
Wearing black badges, journalists sat on the road and raised slogans against the alleged intimidation of media personnel. Addressing the protesters, Warangal East Journalists’ Association president Narender said attempts to suppress voices questioning those in power would not be tolerated. He alleged that followers of the MLA had attacked journalists who were raising public issues in their capacity as members of the Fourth Estate.
Narender said similar incidents had occurred four times and warned that journalists would intensify their agitation if press freedom was undermined. He stressed that protecting media freedom was the responsibility of everyone in a democracy.
Union leaders said those aggrieved by news reports could approach the concerned media organisation or seek legal remedies. Burning effigies and intimidating journalists, they said, had no place in democratic practice.
The protesters demanded government action to ensure journalists’ safety and said their agitation would continue until Nagaraju tendered an apology.
