Wanaparthy: Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao said that when women become literate, they gain self-confidence and access more opportunities to achieve economic self-reliance. The education of women leads to the further development of both their families and society as a whole, reiterating his aspiration that everyone should be able to read and write.

The Minister on Wednesday distributed writing slates and chalks to illiterate women in Tellarallapalli village of Panagal mandal to help them become literate. Earlier he had provided financial assistance of Rs 10,000 for the purchase of these materials.

He emphasised that this initiative should not stop at merely providing basic literacy, but should continue as an ongoing, sustained process. As part of this initiative, it was suggested to Sarpanch Jambalaiah that teachers be appointed to provide one hour of daily instruction—both in the morning and in the evening—to the women in the village.

To support this effort, a financial contribution of Rs. 20,000 was provided. It was noted that age is no barrier to learning. Furthermore, an additional incentive was announced to foster an interest in education among the women,

The Minister declared that a cash prize of Rs. 5,000 would be awarded to the first woman who learns to read and write.
