The Democrats are on the winning side in the U.S. Senate, and they are expected to win the majority in the House of Representatives in the 2026 U.S. midterm elections in a significant blow for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

Either way, the outcomes will likely have major implications for the remaining two years of Trump's presidency, as it will give Democrats more leverage to obstruct the president's agenda and initiate investigations into his administration.

The election has turned into a national test of Trump's second term, as the cost of living, tariffs and the US war against Iran have all been cited as reasons for discontent among voters. Republicans also have been struggling with higher gas prices and lower approval ratings.

Trump signaled that he would veto any Democratic efforts if they secured control of Congress, adding that he would take a different approach if they took control. He posted a picture of a red Republican hat that read "Veto" on his Truth Social.

Democrats Make Gains In Senate

There were several Democratic candidates that won big in key Senate races.

Josh Turek beat the Republican, Ashley Hinson, in Iowa, and Adam Hamilton beat Senator Roger Marshall in Kansas. James Talarico also won in Republican Ken Paxton's home state of Texas.

Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff defeated Republican Mike Collins in re-election in Georgia. The victory was a major win for Democrats in a state where Trump won the 2024 presidential race by a slim margin.

Other Democratic wins were for Sherrod Brown (Ohio), Roy Cooper (North Carolina), Chris Coons (Delaware), Cory Booker (New Jersey) and Juliana Stratton (Illinois).

South Carolina pediatrician Annie Andrews also won a tight race against Darline Graham for the U.S. Senate. Graham had been trying to take over the spot that her late brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, occupied.

Chris Pappas won the DEMOCRATIC seat in the New Hampshire Senate from the Republicans, John E. Sununu.

Democrats Projected To Win House

Democrats are also expected to control the House of Representatives, and thus finally putting an end to the Republican rule in both Houses of Congress.

Suhas Subramanyam, a strong winner in Virginia's 10th Congressional District, was among the prominent winners. Subramanyam's previous experience includes working as an adviser to former President of the United States Barack Obama.

Meanwhile, Republicans held on to some seats, such as those of Ohio's Jim Jordan, Kentucky's James Comer and Florida's Carlos Gimenez.

Gubernatorial races also had some big wins nationwide

Democratic Governors JB Pritzker (Illinois), Maura Healey (Massachusetts), Wes Moore (Maryland), Josh Shapiro (Pennsylvania), Kathy Hochul (New York) and Ned Lamont (Connecticut) were all re-elected.

Elected Florida governor, Republican Byron Donalds defeated Democrat David Jolly. In Georgia, Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms won the governorship, the first black woman elected governor in the United States.

Democrat Vivek Ramaswamy lost to Acton, becoming the first woman to ever be elected governor of Ohio. Her win also became the first Democratic to take a state governorship to a Democratic victory in Ohio in 20 years.

In Wisconsin, Republican Tom Tiffany conceding to Democrat David Crowley, he declared the victory.

Trump signals possible political gridlock

Results of the election may result in a long political battle between the White House and Congress.

Democrats are expected to be in control of both chambers, meaning Trump may have a tough road ahead to get his bills passed. Also, a Democratic Senate majority may make it more difficult to confirm top-level officials and judicial positions, including potential Supreme Court nominees.

Trump had touted his record on a TV appearance before the vote, stressing his policies on immigration and tariffs, as well as his military operations against Iran.

Questions began to arise about whether Trump and GOP leaders could accept defeat if that happens in the election. Trump, who has previously made unverifiable accusations of voter fraud and disputed the 2020 presidential election result, has now taken to Twitter to cast doubt on the results of his own election.Trump, who has been making unverifiable voter fraud accusations and questioning the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, has now turned to Twitter with doubts about the outcome of his own election.

A House race in New York went wrong when voting machines stopped working on Tuesday, which left some right-wing social media influencers accusing of fraud. But local election officials said all ballots would be counted.
