Beijing: Indian Ambassador to China Vikram Doraiswami, along with members of the Indian diaspora, paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his 157th birth anniversary on Friday.
The commemoration ceremony organised by the Indian embassy was held at one of the city’s prominent parks.
Doraiswami paid floral tributes at Gandhi's statue at the Jintai Art Museum, located inside the picturesque Chaoyang Park.
He was joined by Yuan Xikun, the museum curator who sculpted the statue, the Indian embassy said in a social media post.
The statue was installed at the park in 2005.
A soulful musical presentation by Chinese artistes, together with renditions of Gandhi’s favourite bhajans by members of the Indian community, evoked his enduring message of peace, harmony and non-violence, the Indian mission said.
The occasion also saw the felicitation of winners of the Hindi Diwas Competitions 2026, recognising their creativity and enthusiasm for the Hindi language, it said.
In Shanghai, Indian Consul General Pratik Mathur, joined by consul generals of BRICS countries, paid floral tributes and homage to Gandhi.
Indian community leaders from the region and others, including family members of the group of Satyagrahis from China, Shanti Tseng, also took part in the ceremony, the consulate said in a post on X.
Mathur and other distinguished speakers reflected on Gandhi's life, teachings and their relevance in today's world, the post said.
The gathering also paid homage to former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his 122nd birth anniversary, it said.
