Air India Express Kochi-Abu Dhabi Flight Returns After Engine Oil Drops Mid-Air
An Air India Express Boeing 737 that was en route from Kochi to Abu Dhabi saw a sudden drop in the level of oil in one of its engines during the flight and diverted back to the airport.
When the problem was identified, the aircraft (IX 415) from Cochin International Airport towards Abu Dhabi. Later, it was forced to turn back mid-flight with great care. The pilots shut down the damaged engine, and returned safely to Kochi.
It was carrying out a flight of about 50 minutes with the aircraft cruising at about 36,000 feet when the crew noted that the oil level in Engine 1 was rapidly decreasing.
The oil pressure continued to drop and drop into the red zone and the pilots therefore decided to shut down the engine and return to Kochi.
The precautionary move was made to ensure that the aircraft could come back home safely, instead of proceeding on its scheduled flight to Abu Dhabi.
It was then safely landed at Cochin International Airport, after which it was driven away from the plane, to the airport. There were no reports of injuries to passengers or crew after the incident.
A detailed examination of the aircraft is to be expected, to determine the cause of the sudden loss of engine oil and loss of oil pressure.
The cause of the engine-related problem has not been determined yet. A technical investigation should be conducted to determine the reason for the quick drop in oil and if any component failed was part of the problem.
The incident also led to the cancellation of seats for passengers who were heading to Abu Dhabi as the plane was taken out of service for inspection.
When there are any technical warnings, particularly when the continuation of the flight would be hazardous to the operation, the airlines regularly return to the departure airport or alter flight path.
