Actress Dia Mirza's pollution-free campaign video for Diwali has been pulled from the pollution-free campaign by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) after Ameet Satam, president of the BJP in Mumbai, lodged a complaint. The move has caused a political furor with the civic body's decision being met with mixed reactions on social media.

The BMC's awareness drive to popularize an environment-friendly Diwali, after the air pollution level has been rising, and the Bombay High Court's order, had been launched. Many celebrities like Dia Mirza, Madhuri Dixit and cricketer Ajinkya Rahane were asked to make video calls to the people.

But Dia Mirza was criticized by Satam for her presence in the campaign, asking why an actor was giving tips on celebrating the festival.

In a post on X, the Mumbai BJP spokesperson said, "We don't need any lessons on how to celebrate Diwali from Dia Mirza, our traditions are deeply rooted in our culture."

After the actor objected, her video was taken down from the social media. The civic body has not given an official reason for the decision, though.

Shinde Sena spokesperson Shaina NC also took a stance over the controversy, calling the festival as Diwali, the festival of lights, and the actor should have known how important it is. She told news agency PTI that people did not need to be taught by outside people as to how to celebrate Diwali as Mumbaikars.

The BMC's decision caused a split among those online. There was some discussion on social media about what they thought of the video being pulled down, with some defending the need for changing cultural usage and others agreeing with Satam's objection.

The issue has now raised the question on the debate about environment awareness programs and cultural norms, and how public personalities should help spread pollution-free festivities.

Always love to raise the unraised matter. In a world of worries, I am always ready to come over my comfort zone and taking the step ahead of spreading awareness.
