Tamil Nadu has witnessed a sharp spike in the number of Coronavirus confirmed cases over the past few days following the Koyambedu Market cluster outbreak.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu has witnessed a sharp spike in the number of Coronavirus confirmed cases over the past few days following the Koyambedu Market cluster outbreak. The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state has now risen to 7204. Tamil Nadu has reported recoveries of 1959 cases while the death count stands at 47.

Chennai continues to be a major hotspot in Tamil Nadu with 509 cases being reported from the metropolis in a single day, the highest ever in a 24 hour period. A majority of the cases being reported over the past few days are reportedly linked to the Koyambedu Market cluster.

Major Hotspots

Maharashtra continues to be a source of concern as far as Coronavirus positive cases in the country is concerned. The state has reported the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the country with the total number of cases rising to 22,171. Maharashtra has reported recoveries of 4199 patients, while 832 people have succumbed to the deadly pandemic. Mumbai remains the country's biggest hotspot with 13,564 coronavirus positive cases. 875 people tested positive in Mumbai on Sunday alone. The city has reported 508 deaths.

Gujarat is also a state which poses a major challenge for the authorities. The state has reported 8,194 Coronavirus positive cases with 2545 recoveries. Gujarat has recorded a very high mortality rate—493 deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has reported that the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country has now risen to 67,152. India has recorded the sharpest spike in 24 hours reporting more than 4200 cases in a day. 2206 people have lost their lives to the deadly pandemic across the country, while close to 21,000 people have recovered.
