Delhi-NCR came under the rain along with thunderstorms on Friday causing water logging in the region and disrupting air operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
While the weather was bad, nine flights were diverted from Delhi airport between 3.30 pm and 4.30 pm. Four flights were sent to Jaipur, another four to Lucknow and one to Ahmedabad, sources said.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had warned for "red" category heavy rainfall in parts of the region and had predicted further rain and thunderstorm activity in the region on Saturday.
Water has been seen over the approach road and forecourt of Delhi Airport after the heavy downpour.
The water was later removed from the airport and staff is continuing to keep the airport running normally, airport authorities said. But the weather remained a problem, with rain around the country's capital.
Heavy rainfall was also received in several parts of West Delhi, for example, in Gandhi Market, Sagarpur, where water logging was reported.
The heavy downpour caused the roads in some residential colonies to flood, hindering the movement of people living in these areas.
No major traffic jams or water logging was reported on the major arterial roads at the time of the report. But the authorities and commuters were not complacent as further heavy rainfall could result in more water build-up and traffic disruption.
Further worsening of road conditions is likely with thunderstorms/heavy showers continuing to occur across parts of Delhi-NCR.
The IMD's Saturday alert of further rain has led to fears of further waterlogging and disruption in low-lying areas and other low-lying parts of the capital.
