Eight Dead Bodies Recovered After The Building Collapsed Near Mumbai
About eleven people were stuck under the debris of a part of a four-storey building that collapsed late on Thursday night in Bhiwandi in the Thane district of Maharashtra. At least eight bodies have been recovered by rescue workers before 9am Friday, and it is estimated that others are still trapped under the debris.
Bhiwandi Fire Brigade, NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) are carrying out the rescue operation. The building had a total of 48 rooms including 12 rooms in each floor in the building.
Preliminary evidence indicates that the residents claimed to hear loud crackings between 8 pm and 9 pm. There were several families evacuated from the building, after the locals sensed the danger. However a part of the B Wing of the building collapsed between 11 and 11:30 p.m., and some workers and residents were still in the building, while others were attempting to escape.
Nitin Chavan, Fire Officer, Bhiwandi Fire Brigade told, “According to local residents, six occupants of the building and five workers carrying out repair work were reported missing. So far, we have recovered eight bodies from the debris, and there is a possibility that more bodies may still be trapped underneath. Rescue operations are ongoing. The bodies have been sent to IGM hospital and the identification of the workers couldn’t be done not yet.”
According to fire officials, the Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation (BNMC) has earlier deemed the four-story Kohinoor Building in Balaji Nagar, Gangaram Wada, Bhiwandi, 'unsafe.' Repair work was in progress at the time of the incident, even though it was considered risky.
Authorities believe that a number of people might still be buried under the debris. Shamji Pal (46), Santosh Pandey alias Munna (42), Miraj Sheikh (35), and a number of employees whose identities are still unknown are among those who were first reported missing.
Emergency personnel from the Bhiwandi Fire Brigade, NDRF and Bhoiwada Police Station hurried to the accident scene.
The Thane Collectorate issued a statement on Wednesday, saying trained sniffer dogs are helping in the search and rescue operations. Authorities are still searching for and rescuing people buried beneath the rubble, so two ambulances and one JCB excavator have been sent to the scene.
Rescue work and other necessary administration activities are still going on. The exact reasons for the collapse is not yet known.
