Jodhpur: The BJP has named Prasan Chand Mehta as its candidate for the Jodhpur Municipal Corporation mayoral election, while the Congress has fielded Rajendra Solanki.

Mehta filed his nomination around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, accompanied by City MLA Atul Bhansali, Sursagar MLA Devendra Joshi and other party leaders. An RSS-linked BJP leader, Mehta has served as district president and state vice-president and is considered close to Assam Governor Gulabchand Kataria.

He won from Ward 82, defeating Congress candidate Arvind Parihar. Mehta said his priorities would include sanitation, street lighting, roads and water supply.

Joshi expressed confidence in the BJP securing the mayoral post.

Congress candidate Rajendra Solanki, a close associate of former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, did not contest the recent municipal election. Congress councillor and aspirant Naresh Joshi was also present during the nomination process.

Meanwhile, Congress rebel leader Liyaqat Ali Rangrez rejoined the party ahead of nominations. A nomination form was also collected for Saraswati Prajapat of Ward 51.
