Post her recovery from advanced arthritis, foot rot, immobility, and immense trauma, Madhuri comes back to Kolhapur, which is her home for more than three decades.

Madhuri, the elephant who arrived at Vantara, the wildlife rehabilitation and conservation centre in Jamnagar, for specialised medical care after being rescued by Vantara, has completed over a year of treatment and rehabilitation and is now set to return to Nandani Math in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. When Madhuri arrived at Vantara, she was suffering from advanced arthritis, chronic foot rot and significant mobility issues, which had developed over years of restricted movement and prolonged exposure to hard concrete surfaces. Extended durations of being tethered in chains had further limited her natural movement and aggravated her joint stiffness and mobility challenges. Despite her condition, she continued to be used for festivals and public processions, including being made to walk long distances on hot asphalt roads while restrained with ropes.

In Vantara, under the supervision of Anant Ambani, Madhuri had been provided with complete and specialized care by the multidisciplinary team, which emphasized the restoration of her physical health and well-being.

For the past one year in Vantara, Madhuri has been undergoing a thorough rehabilitation process managed by a multidisciplinary team of veterinarians, caregivers, nutritionists and behavior experts. The course of her treatment entailed hydrotherapy, laser therapy, specialized nutrition, foot care and monitoring, in order to improve her mobility, manage her health condition and restore her health.

Apart from her physical rehabilitation process, Madhuri has also gone through an essential emotional rehabilitation process. In Vantara, she was given the chance to socialize and form bonds with other elephants in an enriched environment.

Her return follows an assessment by the Supreme Court-appointed High Powered Committee (HPC), who conducted the assessment of improved health condition of Madhuri. After the assessment, the required permissions were obtained and transit passes for transportation of Madhuri back to Maharashtra state from Gujarat state were issued.

Madhuri will start her journey from Vantara riding on an elephant ambulance. A veterinary team from Vantara will accompany her to take care of her needs during her journey. Not only will Madhuri’s coming back be considered as completing one year of medical journey but will also mean more. It is part of the commitment made by Vantara towards Madhuri. True to his commitment to Madhuri’s well-being, Anant Ambani saw that Madhuri received all the medical care and rehabilitation that she needed at Vantara.
