PM Modi to meet Putin ahead of Brics Summit
Moscow: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a bilateral meeting on Friday ahead of the Brics Summit, according to Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.
At the Brics Summit on Saturday and Sunday, Putin will be joined by the likes of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The meeting will be the second between Modi and Putin in a matter of weeks. The two leaders met last month on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, where Modi told Putin that it was now time to end the "endless" war in Ukraine.
Peskov said that the meeting would focus on developmental issues and cooperation in the domains of security, drugs, counterterrorism, and space, among others. Peskov said the sale of Su-57 fighter plane would be also on the agenda, and Russia would be willing to discuss the transfer of technology that India has sought. As for the summit, Peskov said that Brics had now become a bloc and was no longer just an organisation. As for India's presidency of Brics, he said that cooperation among member-states is based on mutual trust, mutual respect, and mutual benefit.
The Modi-Putin meeting and the Brics Summit take place just days after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's visit to Ukraine and Russia.
Without going into the details, Jaishankar had said that “what we are trying to do is to see if there are ideas and suggestions which can be developed in some way in which they will contribute to the mitigation, ideally, the cessation of the conflict”. He also said that India remains ready to extend “any help in any manner” to end the war.
