Brahmapur: Grief deepened in landslide-ravaged Gidipabali village as rescue teams on Thursday recovered three more bodies, including those of a woman, her child and another child. Eight others remain missing. The recoveries came a day after the search operation was suspended on safety grounds, even as 80 personnel along with Ghumsar Udayagiri Tahasildar Churchil Mishra remain deployed at the disaster site.

The bodies of Sanman Pradhan (29) and Rabi Mallick (52) had been recovered earlier this week. The latest recoveries have brought fresh anguish to families still waiting for their missing relatives. The devastating landslide struck the small hamlet under Baibali panchayat in Bhanjanagar block of Ganjam district around 3 am on October 28, following incessant rain triggered by cyclone Arnab. A massive torrent of mud, rocks and uprooted trees swept down the hillside, burying houses while residents were asleep.

The village, comprising around nine families and 26 residents, was largely wiped out. The multi-agency rescue operation involving ODRAF, NDRF, Fire Services and district administration personnel has been hampered by huge boulders, heaps of mud, difficult terrain and lack of road connectivity.

The search was suspended on Wednesday following concerns over further rainfall and possible landslides. Collector V Keerthi Vasan had said operations would resume only when the site was considered safe for rescuers. Survivors, including families who lost their loved ones, are taking shelter at Kilapanga Primary School in neighbouring Kandhamala district. The administration has assured temporary accommodation, permanent houses for families willing to settle in Ganjam and ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh to each bereaved family.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling launched 20 Mobile Health Units from Aska to provide medical care, medicines and essential healthcare services in flood-affected villages of Ganjam district following cyclone ‘Arnab’. The units, including 15 deployed by the State government and five provided by private hospitals, will reach remote villages to ensure access to medical facilities.

During his visit, the minister inspected several health centres in Aska and Chhatrapur, including Munisipentha, Khandadeuli, UDS Pur and Gobara, and reviewed healthcare services and infrastructure. He directed officials to ensure uninterrupted medical services and arrange a generator set at Munisipentha CHC.
