3-day drive to enrol voters left out of SIR
Bhubaneswar: A three-day drive will be launched in Odisha on October 7 to enrol eligible voters left out of the electoral rolls during the SIR and register newly eligible young voters, a statement said on Tuesday. The office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Odisha, said eligible voters omitted from the final electoral roll for any reason during the SIR exercise, as well as those who have turned 18 by October 1, can apply for inclusion using Form-6.
The special campaign aims to make the electoral roll more accurate, transparent and up to date, the statement said.
The drive comes amid allegations by Opposition BJD and Congress that around 27.5 lakh voters were deleted from the electoral roll during the SIR exercise. Earlier in the day, the Youth Congress staged a demonstration outside the CEO’s office here, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the alleged large-scale deletion of voters.
The final electoral roll was released on September 21, containing around 3.16 crore voters, down from 3.33 crore before the SIR exercise, officials said. Under the special drive, eligible voters can submit Form-6 to their respective Booth Level Officers (BLOs) for registration. The CEO’s office said lists of voters identified as deceased, shifted, absent or duplicate during the SIR process would be published on the websites of the district administrations and the CEO’s office.
Voters will be able to verify the lists and submit claims and objections if any eligible elector has been wrongly excluded or categorised.
The lists will also be shared with representatives of recognised political parties, who can examine them and raise objections where necessary, the statement said.
The CEO’s office urged all eligible voters left out during the SIR exercise and newly eligible young voters to take advantage of the special campaign on October 7, 8 and 9.
