Brahmapur: Youth electrocuted while fixing lights
Brahmapur: A festive night turned tragic when an 18-year-old youth died of electrocution while repairing decorative lights at a Durga Puja mandap in Siddheswar village under Digapahandi block in Ganjam district in the early hours of Saturday.
The deceased, Jagannath Bisoyi of Bisoyi Sahi near the village temple, was reportedly fixing a disconnected electric wire at around 3 am when he came into contact with a live wire and suffered a severe electric shock.
He was rushed to the Digapahandi Community Health Centre CHC in an unconscious state, where doctors declared him dead. Police registered an unnatural death case and initiated an investigation.
ASI Jhunu Majhi reached the health centre, took custody of the body and sent it to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Brahmapur for post-mortem examination.
The body was later handed over to the family, and his last rites were performed at the village cremation ground amid a pall of gloom.
Jagannath had completed his Plus Two studies and was working at a light and sound shop in Brahmapur. He had gone to the village puja mandap after dinner on Friday to help with the decorative arrangements, where the idol of Goddess Durga was being prepared.
According to preliminary police findings, a temporary power line had been drawn from the village Jagannath temple to the puja mandap.
When a halogen light went off around 3 am, Jagannath attempted to repair the disconnected wire but accidentally came into contact with electricity, resulting in his death.
