Jharsuguda students training on hockey turf
Jharsuguda: The Jharsuguda District Hockey Association has started organising morning and evening practice sessions for boys and girls on its newly-built turf field. In addition, the young players who train in the morning are coached by highly skilled professionals. Subhadra Pradhan, the former Indian team captain and former chief selector of the Indian women’s hockey team, provides specialised training sessions on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings.
School students from Belpahad, Laikera, Kirmira, and Brajrajnagar are regularly attending the training sessions. However, due to limited field space, organisers have had to split the sessions into tight shifts. On Saturday afternoons and holidays, students train in two groups: from 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm and 4.30 pm to 5.30 pm. Morning sessions follow a similar split, running from 6.30 am to 7.30 am and 7.30 am to 8.30 am. Local residents and students are actively calling for the construction of a second turf field in the area because of this heavy overcrowding and high demand.
Efforts are underway to build a dedicated sports hostel in Jharsuguda on behalf of the District Hockey Association. Speaking at the Association’s recent Annual General Meeting, Jharsuguda Collector and Association president Kunal Motiram Chavan stated that the State government is prioritising the development of local turf field to support both boys and girls.
