Kotpad: With floodwaters disrupting lives and agricultural activity across parts of southern Odisha, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday visited flood-hit areas of Kotpad in Koraput district and interacted with displaced families. The State government announced a 15-day relief support package and a technical intervention to drain waterlogged farmland.
Majhi visited the affected areas of Pirinji and Chandili and later reached the relief centre at Chandili High School, where families displaced by the flooding have taken shelter. He spoke directly to the affected residents about their immediate difficulties and sought details of the assistance being provided by the administration. The Chief Minister also inspected arrangements for cooked food, drinking water, children’s food and medicines at the shelter.
“The government stands with every flood-affected person in Koraput district. Necessary assistance will be provided as per the rules after assessment of the damage,” Majhi said. But with the immediate emergency response now underway, the larger challenge for the administration is emerging beyond the relief shelters: How quickly damaged agricultural land, crops and rural livelihoods can be restored once the water recedes.
At a review meeting later at Jeypore airport, Majhi took stock of the flood situation in Koraput, Malkangiri and Nabarangpur districts, including affected areas, rescue and relief operations, shelter arrangements and preliminary damage assessment.
Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said families presently staying in relief shelters would receive food, ration, clothing and other essential items for 15 days. The meeting also stressed the need to provide advance compensation or assistance to eligible flood victims according to government norms. A technical team will be deployed to facilitate drainage of stagnant water from agricultural fields and examine measures to enable farmers to resume cultivation after the water recedes.
