Lionel Messi’s leaked contract is worth up to 555 million euros: Details here
Contract leak
Spanish newspaper El Mundo has reported that Lionel Messi’s new contract with FC Barcelona is worth up to 555 million euros ($673 million) over four seasons.
Will Messi leave Barca?
Messi agreed to the contract in November 2017, which expires on June 30 this year, when Messi will leave Camp Nou if there is no agreement with the club over an extension.
Record contract in history
Messi's new deal included fixed incomes and variables that could reach nearly 138 million euros ($167 million) each season. El Mundo has also claimed it is the most expensive contract ever paid to an athlete.
Bonus from Barcelona
The deal included a signing-on bonus of €115,225,000 for accepting the renewal and a "loyalty" bonus of €77,929,955.
Taxes
The Barcelona captain Messi reportedly would have to pay half the amount in taxes in Spain.
Messi has earned most of it
The newspaper has also claimed that the 33-year-old superstar has already secured more than 510 million euros ($619 million) of the total contract.
30-plus titles
Messi has rewarded the club in return by leading the Catalans to over 30 titles.
Barcelona’s debt
Messi’s 30-page contract is certainly one of the significant reasons behind Barcelona’s current financial crisis. It is understood that the Catalan club is in a debt of over a billion euros and player wages are responsible for almost three-quarters of the club's budget.
‘Messy’ Barcelona
The club went without winning a single trophy last season. In the summer, Messi put in a transfer request and blamed then-chief Bartomeu for the club’s miseries. At present, Barcelona does not have a president in place with the elections set to be held next month. Barca are 10 points behind La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid. It is more or less known that they are set to lose their skipper at the end of 2020-21.
