Virat Kohli
India captain Virat Kohli is one of the greatest batsmen to have graced the game. Kohli, who has been playing for India for over a decade, has broken and set many records over the years.
Fastest to 1,000 ODI runs
Kohli reached 1,000 runs in ODIs in 24 innings and is the joint-fastest Indian to the landmark along with Shikhar Dhawan. Overall, he is the joint-fifth fastest to 1K runs in the 50-over format.
Fastest to 2,000 ODI runs
The jump from 1,000 to 2,000 was not the fastest for Kohli. He completed 2,000 ODI runs in 53 innings, whereas Dhawan, who is the fastest Indian to the milestone, needed only 48 innings.
Fastest to 3,000 ODI runs
With 75 innings, Kohli is the second fastest Indian to 3,000 ODI runs, after Dhawan, who had needed three fewer innings than the skipper. The overall record is held by South Africa legend Hashim Amla, who completed 3,000 runs in just 57 ODI innings.
Fastest to 4,000 ODI runs
Kohli also holds the record of being the fastest Indian batsman to the 4,000 mark in the ODIs. He reached the milestone in 93 innings. Overall, he is the fourth fastest after Amla, Viv Richards and Joe Root.
Fastest to 5,000 ODI runs
While Proteas’ Amla holds the record of fastest 5,000 runs in the ODIs (101 innings), Kohli is joint-second, along with Windies great Viv Richards (114 innings).
Fastest to 6,000 ODI runs
Once again, Amla is at the helm of this list. He completed 6,000 runs in 123 innings, whereas Kohli, second in the list, needed 136 innings. Meanwhile, Dhawan is the second fastest Indian to 6,000 ODIs runs (140 innings).
Fastest to 7,000 ODI runs
With every passing milestone, Kohli had been reducing the gap between himself and Amla. Kohli (161) took just 11 innings more than Amla to reach 7,000 runs in the ODIs. Former captain Sourav Ganguly is still the second fastest Indian to 7,000 ODI runs, having reached it in 174 innings.
Fastest to 8,000 ODI runs
Finally, Kohli defeated Amla as he took one innings less to complete 8,000 runs in the ODIs. The India batter completed the feat in 175 innings. The second fastest Indian to the landmark is once again Ganguly (200 innings).
Fastest to 9,000 ODI runs
During India’s tour of New Zealand in 2017, Kohli became the fastest batsman to 9,000 ODI runs. He achieved the feat in 194 innings, 11 innings faster than second-placed AB de Villiers. Rohit Sharma (217 innings) is the second fastest Indian to 9,000 runs in the ODIs.
ON THIS DAY: Fastest to 10,000 ODI runs
On October 24, 2018, during an ODI against West Indies in Vishakapatnam, Kohli became the fastest batsman to the huge milestone of 10,000 runs. Kohli, who made his ODI debut in 2008, took just a year to reach 10,000 runs and he did that in 205 innings. He took 54 fewer innings than second-placed Sachin Tendulkar and 58 fewer than third-placed Ganguly.
