You can make UPI payments even without mobile data or Wi-Fi by dialling *99# from your registered mobile number. The USSD-based facility is useful in areas with poor network connectivity or when internet access is unavailable.
What Is Offline UPI?
Introduced by NPCI, the *99# service allows users to access basic banking services through simple mobile menus. It supports 13 languages and works with basic phones as well as smartphones.
How to Activate the Service
Dial *99#, select your preferred language, enter your bank's IFSC code and choose the account you want to link. Verify your identity using the last six digits and expiry date of your debit card to activate the service.
Steps to Send Money
Dial *99# and select option 1, 'Send Money'. Enter the recipient's UPI ID, registered mobile number or bank account details. Enter the amount and your UPI PIN to authorise the transaction.
Transaction Limits and Charges
Offline UPI transactions are capped at Rs 5,000 per payment. A nominal service charge of Rs 0.50 applies to every transaction.
Important Things to Remember
The service works only with your bank-registered mobile number and does not require internet connectivity. Users can dial *99# and follow the menu instructions to deactivate the service when required.
