Promoting use of ham radios for city students

A seminar on ‘Ham Radio and its Uses’ was held to promote the benefits of practicing Ham communication among the student community, at SRR and CVR Government Degree College in the city on Friday. Organised by the Ham Radio Training Center of the city, students of the Science discipline were enlightened about the needs and uses of the communication system in times of emergency.
Coordinator for the event A Ramesh Babu addressing the students said that Ham Radio communication will encourage them to experiment with many facets of electronics subject. It is one among the best personal hobby ideas that enables the person to develop skills. It aids in learning languages, circuit design construction and experimenting. Most of all it is an excellent communication tool during disasters, he said.
He asked the students to pursue Ham Radio so that they can create a communication team for the city. A Very High Frequency (VHF) repeater worth Rs 3 lakh has been acquired by the city Hams who are awaiting permission to set up station atop Gunadala hill. The station covers distance of about 100 kilometers which makes the communication (wireless) through walkie-talkie easy and accessible for the Hams, he added.
Principal of the College B Ravi, head of the department of Physics B V S Bhaskar Rao, lecturer T V Ram Babu, English department lecturer and Ham T Nageswara Rao, others were present during the seminar.
