Playlets with a social message dominated the scene at a three-day competition organised by the Tapaswi Cultural Arts Welfare Society, which began at Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao Government Music and Dance College on Thursday. Speaking at the inaugural function, Krishna Zilla Parishad chairperson Gadde Anuradha said that theatre was a powerful medium to enlighten the society.

“The government is planning to promote fine arts and theatre in a big way to uphold the rich culture and heritage of the Telugu people,” she said. Doordarshan Deputy Director General M Sailaja Suman said that it would lay more emphasis on encouraging budding talent as part of its efforts to promote theatre art.

ACP TSRK Prasad underlined the role of cultural societies in upholding the rich culture and heritage. AV Ramana presided over the function. Stage artiste and corporator Kaku Mallikharjuna Yadav was felicitated on the occasion. Later, Gangotri of Pedakakani staged ‘Gamanam’ written by Munipalle Vidyadhar. Naidu Gopi, who directed the play, essayed the main role of Viswam.

The other artistes in the playlet included Gummadi Nageswara Rao, B Babu Rao and T Lakshmi. It was followed by ‘Dattata Sweekaram’ presented by Jana Sreeni of Vijayawada. Along with director Udaya Bhaskar, R Adiseshayya, Haridev Krishna, Poorna Satyam, Y Bhaskara Rao, Nageswara Rao, Vasu, A Rama Krishna and T Lakshmi acted in the playlet written by Y Bhaskara Rao.

The second day of the competition began with the playlet ‘Maro Devalayam’ staged by Ushodaya Kalaniketan of Hyderabad. Cherukuri Sambasiva Rao, who directed the playlet, appeared in the main role. Other roles were donned by Jana Ramaiah, K Mastan Rao and S Amruta Varshini. Leela Mohan and Sarathi extended technical support to the play.

Later, Sri Siva Krishna Kalakarula Ananya Samakhya of Vijayawada presented ‘Amma... Nanna... Nenu’, written and directed by ES Pavan Kumar, who essayed the main role of Akashnath. ES Ramesh, I Kanta Rao, Jonnavithula Ramakrishna and Vijayalakshmi acted in other roles. Jonnavithula Ramakrishna was felicitated on the occasion. Karnati Lakshmi Narasaiah, B Ramana Reddy, Panduranga, BJP leaders D Umamaheswara Raju and Yeleswarapu Jaganmohana Raju and others were present.
