A two-day workshop on `Big Data Analytics’ began at Andhra Loyola Institute of Engineering and Technology (ALIET) in the city on Friday. Fr Francis Xavier, Director, Fr Thomas, Assistant Director, and O Mahesh, principal of ALIET, inaugurated the workshop being organised by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

Participating in the workshop as a chief guest, Srikanth Gorripati, IT Analyst, TCS, Chennai, said any voluminous amount of structured, semi-structured and unstructured data that has the potential to be mined for information can be termed big data, which can be characterised by 3 Vs - the extreme volume of data, the wide variety of types of data and the velocity at which the data must be processed.

Although big data does not refer to any specific quantity, the term is often used when speaking about petabytes and exabytes of data and much of which cannot be integrated easily, he said. Explaining Hadoop, he said it is a free Java-based programming framework that supports the processing of large data sets in a distributed computing environment.

Subsequently, he illustrated Hadoop's installation process in three different modes Standalone, Pseudo-Distributed and Fully Distributed. He also covered MapReduce, Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS), Pig, Hive, Apache Sqoop, Apache Flume, Oozie, Kafka, Hbase, MongoDB and other concepts and cleared the doubts of students pertaining to Big Data Analytics. Later, Srikanth was felicitated by the Assistant Director of ALIET. K Prasanthi Jasmine, Head of Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and other faculty members were present.
