Cock-fights to go cashless this Sankranti

As the demonetisation impact is very huge in the rural areas, cock-fight organisers are gearing up for cashless fights and use of mobile apps to transfer the money online.
Cock-fight is a traditional betting game during the three day festival of Bhogi, Sankranti and Kanuma which is in the second week of January. Though there is an official ban on cockfights in the State, the organisers conduct the cockfights with the help of political leaders. Leaders of all political parties including some MLAs attend the cockfights which are held in in East and West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur and other Coastal districts.
Due to impact of demonetization, the villagers are left without new currency notes. Keeping this in mind they are planning to depend on cashless transactions this time around. The punters should invest between Rs.50,000 to Rs.1 lakh, but the punters are not in a position to withdraw money from the banks due to short supply of cash.
The bankers are limiting the money to Rs.24,000 for each account holder. In this backdrop, the punters are planning for cashless fights using mobile apps, said K Naresh, one of the organiser in Nunna. This year cock-fight betting would be based on trust, he felt.
Some of the punters started using internet banking services to manage cock-fights. Liquor shops, biryani-points, non-vegetarian fast food centres, pan shops and even entertainment programmes like recording dances will be arranged at the venues for three days.
The cock fighting organisers have been searching for suitable places to conduct cock-fights. Every year some crores of rupees are being spent at the time of Makara Sankrnti in the name of Cock-fights. Every year police higher authorities usually warn cock-fighters and book bind over cases against organisers. But, political leaders successfully influence officials to manage cock-fights without any hindrances.
Interestingly, some MPs, Ministers of AP, Telangana and Karnataka and other states come to Krishna, Guntur, East and West Godavari districts to celebrate the festival with cock-fights and delicacies. The betting amount is estimated at Rs.1000 crore every year.
