RTC seeks dedicated lane for buses
The said zone has suffered losses to the tune of Rs 450 crore during the previous year. When the RTC officials analysed the efficiency of the staff, they found out that the mileage of the buses goes for toss within the limits of GHMC and the reason being the traffic jams.
With huge traffic jams in the city resulting in low mileage, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) has decided to ask the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) authorities to provide a dedicated lane for the RTC buses so that the corporation can increase revenues in Greater Hyderabad zone.
The said zone has suffered losses to the tune of Rs 450 crore during the previous year. When the RTC officials analysed the efficiency of the staff, they found out that the mileage of the buses goes for toss within the limits of GHMC and the reason being the traffic jams.
“The average speed of the RTC bus in the city limits is 14 km per hour and the Metro Rail works too have added to the traffic jams,” said a senior official in the corporation.
The RTC Greater Hyderabad zone has a fleet of over 3,800 buses, 28 depots. The zone operates 9.74 lakh kilometers and transports 34.02 lakh commuters every day and Rs 31.68 being the earnings per km.
“Traffic jams have become a regular phenomenon on roads and this results in high consumption of diesel in the buses and affecting the RTC. The corporation suffers a loss of over Rs 5 per kilometer,” said sources.
In this regard, RTC Chairman S Satyanarayana stressed on the need to encourage the people to opt for the public transport. He said that in Hyderabad, 80 per cent of motor vehicles either have single person or two persons including the driver. He said that in foreign countries, governments encourage free transportation to the State and private vehicles, which have more passengers.
“A separate lane is maintained for government and private vehicles,” he said. The Chairman informed that they have asked the GHMC authorities to see that there is a dedicated lane particularly for the city buses.
“If the civic body could provide this dedicated lane, the Corporation would not require any financial assistance from them and in turn RTC can provide revenues by coming into profits,” said Satyanarayana.
