marriHyderabad : National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) vice-chairman Marri Shashidhar Reddy said that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) might have swung into action immediately after City Light Hotel collapsed, to rescue the victims, if the State government showed the site to set up NDRF in Hyderabad.

Addressing the mediapersons on Tuesday, Shashidhar Reddy said that the NDMA asked for a site to set up NDRF in Hyderabad two years back, but somehow the government did not show any site so far. He said that the NDMA set up two battalions in Mangalagiri to rescue victims whenever disasters took place. The NDRF had all the equipment to sniff human lives under debris at the time of collapse of buildings and other disasters.

Referring to the City Light Hotel collapse incident, he said that hotel owner placed heavy material such as bricks, firewood and big basins to cook haleem upstairs. "Because of the heavy weight, the hotel building collapsed," he said, adding that the building was constructed without proper pillars. He said that the GHMC commissioner informed about more such buildings in the city and notices were served to them.

On setting up of State Disaster Management Authority in each state, he said that NDMA has been insisting the state governments to set-up SDMA in every state by appointing full-pledged vice-chairman to each state. He said that ministers were appointed as members in the SDMA in most of the states. "States should have a full-pledged disaster mechanism to face any type of disasters like tsunami, earthquake, cyclone, floods, building collapse and gales at anytime," he observed.

Shashidhar Reddy, who reviewed the City Light Hotel incident, said that the officials of GHMC were asked to set-up rainfall gauging system in every ward of Hyderabad to estimate the rainfall severity and analyse what steps are to be taken. He said that 70 per cent of the houses in Hyderabad should be rebuilt by 2035 due to it's beyond expectancy and added that the GHMC officials should be cautious about it.
