Heavy rains lash North Telangana

* Low-lying areas inundated * Coal production disrupted * Flood threat to Srikakulam * 30,000 cusecs let into sea

Hyderabad: Heavy rain lashed several parts of North Telangana districts on Friday throwing normal life out of gear in Nizamabad and Adilabad districts, as the Southwest Monsoon was active in the entire State. The north coastal district of Srikakulam faced the threat of flood due to heavy rush of water in the Nagavali and Vamsadhara rivers as heavy rains lashed their catchment areas in Odisha in the last few days.

Nizamabad division recorded a rainfall of 5 cm while Bodhan and Kamareddy divisions received 3 cm each. In Adilabad district, Bellampalli division recorded a rainfall of 3 cm while Srirampur division received 4 cm rain. Low-lying areas in several towns in the districts were flooded and water flowing on the roads due to continuous downpour.

Production in open cast mines of the Singareni Collieries was disrupted in Srirampur and Bellampalli divisions. The Met office said that Nizamabad, Khammam, Karimnagar, Adilabad and Nalgonda districts are likely to receive rains in the next 24 hours. Two main rivers in the district Nagavali and Vamsadhara were in spate raising fears of floodwaters inundating several mandals. The authorities opened 13 gates of Gotta Barrage on Vamsadhara, to let 32 thousand cusecs of floodwater into the sea.

The district administration opened control rooms in collectorate and at mandal offices to meet any emergency. The official sources said as there were no rains in the districts, the floodwater flow could come down by Saturday and there might be no threat of floods in the district.
