2-wheelers account for highest number of road accidents in the State

Hyderabad: Two wheelers account for as many as 21.7 road accidents on the National Highways in the State, indicating the need for more disciplined driving by the riders. According to an analysis of the State police, as many as 12,725 road accidents were reported on the National Highways in 2012 with 4,911 fatalities. Additional Director General of Police, Road Safety, Satyanarain told The Hans India that accidents have come down by 7 per cent in 2012 when compared to 2011, while fatalities also reduced by 4 per cent.

"We have been able to achieve this with the help of local police officials and consistent follow-up activity. Raids have been conducted across the State at dhabas and food joints to check supply and consumption of liquor," the police officer said. "We have sent a proposal to the government for the purchase of 63 interceptor vehicles to book vehicles violating speed regulations. We hope to receive approval for the proposal very soon and this would reduce the number accidents occuring due to high speed."

Satyanarain said. Of the total accidents, two wheelers involved in the accidents accounted for 21.7 per cent followed by light motor vehicles (LMVs) with 17.8 per cent, trucks and lorries with 15.6 per cent, tractors and customised vehicles with 15.5 per cent and buses accounting for 8.8 per cent.

Of the 8.8 per cent buses involved in accidents last year, 5.6 per cent were RTC buses, which was a cause of worry for the RTC management.
