Hyderabad : All unconnected habitations will soon get road connectivity in the State as the Union government has cleared a proposal for providing road connectivity to 278 eligible habitations under Pradhan Manthri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in six districts.
Government has sent a proposal to Union Ministry of Rural Development seeking central funds to provide road connectivity to all habitations under the centrally sponsored PMGSY last year. State Roads and Buildings and Panchayat Raj departments informed the union ministry that the total number of unconnected habitations in the state was 556, out of which 25 habitations are not accessible and not feasible to provide connectivity.
It required Rs 2,000 crore to lay roads and improve the connectivity. Since no specific allocations were made to take up road networks in the habitations in the State budget, the two departments urged the Centre to take up the road works on priority basis. The officials of the R and B departments said that in the first phase 278 habitations in Khammam, Adilabad, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Prakasham and Mahbubnagar districts will be connected. For remaining habitations, the ministry asked the state to send Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) of the roads duly verified by the state technical agency for considerations by this August. Since the inception of the PMGSY in 2000 in the country, Andhra Pradesh has got a raw deal in the allocation funds and road development works.
The officials said that the it was first time that the union ministry agreed to develop road connectivity in all unconnected habitations in the next two years. The officials of the R and B and Panchayat Raj departments will soon hold a meeting to finalise the DPRs and forward them without any delay. A Under the scheme, all eligible unconnected habitations with a population of 500 persons and above in plain areas and 250 persons and above in hill areas in Tribal and backward districts will be connected by laying roads.
