tg venkateshAnticipating an announcement of a package for backward regions, the Seemandhra leaders in Congress party who were scheduled to meet on Saturday at Ministers Quarters have decided to postpone the meeting to a later date. Talking to media on Friday, Minister for Minor Irrigation TG Venkatesh said that they have definite information that the Centre would announce special financial package for the backward regions of the State. This, he said was a welcome step and they have no objection if the Centre gives the first package to Telangana region.

The Seemandhra leaders who had met in the Assembly chambers of Minister for Infrastructure, Ghanta Srinivasa Rao on Friday morning had first decided to hold public meetings at Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Hyderabad. But few hours later they held another meeting and announced that they had put their earlier decision on hold in the wake of the unprecedented floods in Uttarkashi and the problems being faced by the char dham yatra pilgrims.

But sources say that they have been asked by the party high command not to hold any public meetings at this stage. Venkatesh said that they have been demanding special packages for all backward regions for long. Financial packages will help the region in taking up several developmental activities and that is what the people want. Bifurcation of the state is a political agenda for some leaders, he said.

Asked if that were the case, why the T Congress leaders were organising a public meeting on June 30, the minister said they were doing so to find a face-saving method as they were facing the T heat. He hoped that the T Congress leaders too will reconsider their decision to hold a meeting on June 30 in view of the problems being faced by the Telugu speaking people in Uttarkashi and other areas.

On the formation of Rayala Telangana, Venkatesh said that was not an issue now. The T protagonists had been alleging that they want a separate T state claiming that the region was backward in many respects. They should accept the package first and address the backwardness.
