Anakapalli (Visakhapatnam): The slain inspector of Greyhounds Karanam Leela Venkata Srinivasa Naga Hari Vara Prasad Babu (34) was given a tearful farewell in his native village of Marturu on Sunday evening.

The body was brought by the police by road from Cherla village near Bhadrachalam after it was handed over by the Maoists on Saturday evening. The inspector fell to Maoists' bullets while boarding a helicopter after participating in the encounter four days ago.

Several women organisations, youth welfare associations and members of various political leaders received the body in Anakapalli and carried in a huge procession to his native village. The body was kept in his house for about 10 minutes for the family members and then shifted to local panchayat office where thousands of people paid floral tributes to the inspector. A State funeral was given to the officer by the armed police firing three rounds as a last respect.

The pyre was lit by his father K Venkataramana.A Minister for Ports and Infrastructure Ganta Srinivasa Rao, Greyhounds IG Seetharamanjaneyulu, DIG Stephen Ravindra, Visakha Range DIG Swathi Lakra, rural SP G Srinivasa Rao, Anakapalli ASP Kishore Kumar, Narsipatnam Vishal Gunnu, Paderu OSD Damodar, DSP and several police personnel took part in the funeral.
