In a major move of pacifying the people of Seemandhra region, the State government on the directions of Central government is planning to set up Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR) zones - one each in Visakhapatnam, Tirupathi and Aanantapur. The ITIR would include SEZs, industrial parks and export-oriented units. .

Addressing media persons here on Monday, the Minister for Information Technology and Communications, Ponnala Lakshmaiah, said that detailed project reports (DPRs) have already been commissioned for the ITIR zones at the three places. He said that an interactive meeting would be held in Tirupati on October 26 to finalise the modalities.

After a meeting with Asia-Pacific Oracle Senior Vice-President Adrian Jones and Oracle India Managing Director Sandeep Mathur, he said that once the DPRs are received, the government would immediately take steps to allocate suitable land in all the three regions.

The minister acknowledged that there have been misgivings in the minds of the people of Seemandhra region of a possible discrimination, after the Union Cabinet recently approved setting up of Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR) near Hyderabad at an investment of around Rs 2.19 lakh crore.

It is to allay these misgivings that the Andhra Pradesh Government has decided to go ahead with the ITIR in Visakhapatnam, Tirupati and Anantapur. The Minister said two DPRs have been commissioned. One is for the ITIR in Visakhapatnam. The other DPR would be common for the ITIR in both Tirupati and Anantapur regions. Finding land would not be a problem, he said.

Stating that the ITIR Tirupati would be a minimum area of 40 sqkm, he, however said that delineated area may not be contiguous. He said that the development of ITIR would be undertaken in two phases – phase one of maximum 20 per cent of notified area in first five years of implementation and phase two with a development time frame of 15-20 years. He said that Ananthpur would come under Tirupathi ITIR.

Lakshmaiah said innovative steps are being taken for providing broadband connectivity to all villages. In fact, 4G network expansion to major towns apart from the principal cities has been accorded top priority in order to bring down the Internet costs.

The Minister attached high importance to his meeting with Asia-Pacific Oracle Senior Vice-President Adrian Jones and Oracle India Managing Director Sandeep Mathur, as Oracle has emerged as Number 2 IT firm globally. It has Rs 1,20,000 crore investments across 150 countries in the world. Adrian Jones expressed satisfaction over his meeting with Ponnala Lakshmaiah, saying it was a great dialogue.
