Heavy and incessant rains lashed the coastal districts of Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, East and West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore as well as Kadapa district in Rayalaseema on Tuesday, disrupting normal life.
Low lying areas in several towns were inundated, with water entering houses and forcing people to shift to safer places. Several irrigation tanks and reservoirs were full to the brim due to fresh inflows, while rivulets are in spate at several places. Many drains are overflowing in the affected districts.
The Cyclone Warning Centre (CWC) officials said in Visakhapatnam that a well-marked low pressure off coastal Andhra Pradesh and the active North East monsoon caused the heavy downpour. They predicted more rains in the next two days. The rains, which started in the early hours, continued throughout the day.
The south coastal districts of Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and West Godavari received an average of six cm rainfall. The District Collectors have alerted the administration in all the four districts and have opened control rooms to meet any eventuality.
In Guntur district, farmers of Palanadu area are faced with the prospects of damage to cotton crop in about five lakh acres.
Flood water entered the Gundlakamma project, forcing officials to open four gates to allow 15,000 cusecs of water to go down stream.
In Kadapa district, roads were flooded by overflowing drains with most stretches now looking like pools. In Visakhapatnam, it was veritable hell on Tuesday due to flooding of roads by overflowing drains amid uncleared garbage due to strike by sanitation workers over the past two days.
