Although the intensity of the rain lashing elsewhere in the State for the last one week came down on Sunday, it continued to hit North Andhra districts and East Godavari severely damaging crops and causing breaches to rivulets. Water level in several rivers/canals has been rising steadily inundating many villages in East and West Godavari, Visakhapatnam and Krishna districts.

In Nalgonda district Irrigation officials lifted the Musi project crest gates to release the flood water. The flood damage can be gauzed as half of the hotel where TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu stayed during his Saturday’s tour of Srikakulam was under water.

Rivers Thandava and Varaha in Visakhapatnam district are overflowing severely affecting Yelamanchili town and S Rayavaram mandal. Traffic on the Chennai-Kolkata national highway was disrupted after the rivers flooded it.

Transportation to about 100 villages in Devarapalli, Anantagiri, Hukumpet mandals was disrupted. Three crest gates of Revada reservoir were lifted to release 7,000 cusecs downstream. The railway track near Anakapalli was under water, forcing the officials to cancel several trains.

The national highway was flooded following a breach to tank at Salapuvanipalem, 15 km from Visakhapatnam, affecting vehicular traffic between Vizag and Anakapalli.

Kandula Maheswara Rao (65) and Lokaratnam (40) were washed away after Venkatadri tank near Tallapalem in Kasimkota mandal breached. Ten fishermen of Bangarupalem in S Rayavaram mandal who went to the sea are missing.

Fifty thousand cusecs from the Nagavali River were released following heavy rain in Odisha. Thirty villages in Amudalavalasa mandal were inundated. Kothakuguriya bridge at Isukapet in the mandal developed a crack. Sixty goats and sheep were killed in a wall-collapse at Nimmalapadu in Hira mandal.

Ten thatched houses in Krishnapuram in Pondur mandal collapsed as the village was flooded after a tank breached. Lightning has struck one person to death at Budagallapalem, Etcherla mandal. A trader was killed in wall-collapse in Kanakadurgamma temple street near the Seven Roads Junction.

In Vizianagaram district, low-lying areas and roads were inundated following heavy rain since Saturday night till 10 am on Sunday. Ten cm rainfall was recorded in Bogapuram, Pusapatirega, Chipurupalli, Garividi, Garla and Nellimarla mandals, bringing heavy inflows into rivulets and streams. Normal life in the district was paralysed by rain lashing the district for the last six days.

In East Godavari district, flight services from Rajahmundry Airport were cancelled as runway was inundated partially due to heavy rains on Sunday. Jet Airways cancelled its services to Hyderabad and Chennai whereas Spice Jet cancelled its flight to Hyderabad. Earlier, Jet Airways flight which came to Rajahmundry airport from Hyderabad had to return after making rounds in the air as the Airport authorities did not give clearance due to the partial inundation of the runway.
