A poverty-stricken family’s bid to sell a four-day-old girl child has been thwarted by an Anganwadi teacher on Monday.
The issue came to light when the parents Sudhakar and Saroja from Arutla village in Manchala mandal in Ranga Reddy district were looking to sell their baby girl despite strong opposition from the village heads. According to reports, Sudhakar was badly in need of money and decided to sell away the baby to a childless couple from Hyderabad. After knowing his plans, the village elders cautioned him against the sale.
But the unrelenting father tried to give away the child to a family that offered an amount of Rs 10,000.
As the baby is the second girl child of the family, the father was desperate to get rid of her.
His relatives reportedly tried to educate him about the ‘Bangaru Talli’ scheme sponsored by the State government in aid of the girl child, but they could not persuade him to relent. Finally, on a tip-off, the Anganwadi teacher entered the scene and took hold of the baby.
Local ICDS official Suguna counselled the couple and sent the child to Shishu Vihar.
