Prominent women activists, who gathered at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram on Thursday to make suggestions to Civil Liberties Committee (previously APCLC), felt that Laws enacted by the government to counter rising sexual assaults on women may not be enough to eradicate the problem, unless the patriarchal society changes its mindset towards women.
Addressing the gathering, Raghunath, CLC state committee member blamed the insensitivity by the civil society towards the victims is worsening state of affairs. The role of judiciary and law enforcing agencies would also mean a lot in curbing the menace, he said. Sandhya, POW, suggested that cab facility should not only be provided to women working in IT companies, but also to those working in companies located at Jeedimetla, Katedan and other areas. She further said that the 108 helpline could be extended or linked to the women’s helpline as it already had an advanced GPS system.

Uma Bharathi, a student of HCU, said that the rapes in villages don’t even get reported. She questioned why parents fail to discipline boys and prevent them from wandering at nights, which was the main reason for the crimes to happen.
Sirisha, Student Union President, HCU, said that it was a bitter truth that molestation and sexual assaults happen in some homes, perpetrated often by the family members and they do influence the mindset of the kids being affected by it.
Aruna, HMTV reporter brought to the notice of activists how the state sponsored violence too had been depriving Dalit woman and Adivasis of their basic rights in places like Chhattisgarh, Manipur, Odisha and even in Sri Lanka.
Prof Laxmi, Osmania University, U Satyawati, Bhumika Women’s Collective, SL Padma, IFTU, Bichani Banoth, Kakatiya University, Shilpa, Chetna, Belliah Naik, LHPS, Jhansi, POW, Prof Laxman, CLC, Sajaya, Anveshi also spoke at the event.
