Normal life went out of gear in the Bhadrachalam division on Friday, the first day of the 72-hour bandh observed by all sections of people in response to the call given by various journalist organisations, Telangana JACs and several political parties, seeking retention of Bhadrachalam in Telangana in the event of the State’s bifurcation. The bandh passed off peacefully. It was total in all eight mandals of the division.
All commercial establishments, educational institutions, cinema halls and petrol bunks remained closed in the town. In Vajedu and Venkatapuram mandals the Telangana protagonists squatted on the roads participating in ‘Ata-Pata’ protest programmes. In Charla, Vararamachandrapuram mandals they raised pro-Telangana slogans.
At Nallabelli, in Dummugudem mandal, the agitators forced closure of shops and burnt the effigy of Union Minister K Chiranjeevi. Members of Muslim minority organisations and women’s associations went on relay fast at Ambedkar centre to emphasise that Bhadrachalam was part of Telangana. They criticised the Seemandhra leaders for ‘conspiring’ to secure merger of Bhadrachalam with that region by supporting construction of Polavaram project, following which the temple town would be submerged.
The APSRTC services remained off the roads, as the bandh supporters squatted in front of the bus stand here. All 118 services of the Bhadrachalam depot remained indoors. Outstation RTC services were stopped at Sarapaka, causing severe hardship to people, particularly Rama devotees, who sought to visit the Bhadrachalam Temple in view of the ‘Karthika Masam’. The RTC is likely to suffer a loss of Rs. 40-50 lakh in account of the bandh.Rama devotees had to walk across the bridge from Sarapaka, with difficulty. Since early morning journalists and leaders of JACs staged ‘rasta roko’ demonstrations and blocked vehicular traffic. Consequently, transportation to three States was severely affected
Several political parties and civil society organisations supported the bandh, the impact of which was clearly visible in the town. Streets wore a deserted look. There was a sharp decline in the number of devotees visiting the Rama Temple, the Ayodhya of the South. The temple was deserted.
