A large number of Hindu devotees from several States, besides those from Andhra Pradesh, are making a beeline to Basheerabad Dargah here to take part in the famous ‘Rottela Panduga,’ which coincides with Muharram.

They exchanges rotis and fulfilled their vows at Swarnala Tank near here on Friday.

The dargah has become a beehive of activity, with thousands of devotees thronging the tank to secure their share of rotis. There are more crowds this year, say elders who have been regular to the festival.

Large gatherings were also seen at two other important dargahs in the town – A S Peta and Hazarath Khaja Nayub Rasool, besides Mastanvali Dargah in Kusumuru.

The festival attracts a large number of Hindus also from nook and corner of the country.

The Nellore town is chock-a-block with vehicles and people pouring out on all main roads. Vehicles are trudging bumper-to-bumper from Podulakur Road and K V R petrol bunk.

The ‘Rottela Panduga’ is to be celebrated on November 17, preceded by ‘Mahagandostavam’ on Saturday night. The festivities began on Friday with ‘Gandhostavam’, even as officials of various departments made elaborate arrangements so as not to inconvenience the visitors.

District Collector N Srikanth, SP P V Ramakrishna, Nellore Town and Rural MLAs Mungamur Sridharkrishna Reddy and Anam Vivekananda Reddy supervised the ‘panduga’ arrangements.

They visited the dargah and sought the opinion of the devotees about the arrangements being made for their benefit.

They instructed officials to ensure that none was inconvenienced, laying stress on efficient traffic management. They asked the police to take suitable steps to maintain law and order.
