In a ghastly accident, six members of a family were killed and five others injured in the early hours of Saturday at Swarna toll plaza on the National Highway V in Venkatachalam mandal. The victims, belonging to Rajampet in Kadapa district, were coming to take part in the rottela panduga in a van. The driver lost control and crashed into a lorry coming in the opposite direction.
While sameera (four), Hasanvali (40), Shaik Durbar (27), Osham Bi (40), Mastanali (35), besides the driver were killed on the spot, two others, Shaik Khadervali (35) and Khafir (six) died in the government hospital.
The injured—Shaik Arifulla Khan(35), Shamshad Begum, his sons Irfan (seven) and Noor Mohammad (11) and Khader Basha---were shifted to Bollineni Superspeciality Hospital, here. The condition of Irfan and Noor Mohammad was serious, doctors said.
The relatives alleged that doctors of the government hospital failed to turn up even 20 minutes after the injured were brought there. They screamed in distress noticing the staff negligence. The duty doctor did not respond even after the bleeding injured cried loudly in agony, rousing passions of the relatives.
District Collector N Srikanth expressed his ire at the doctors’ ‘negligence’ and pulled them up. The doctors’ negligence also claimed the life of a youth of Jerepalli, who resorted to suicide after being scolded by his father.
Minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy and Mohd. Ahmedulla, the Collector and SP Ramakrishna consoled the injured. Ramanarayana Reddy said the injured were sent to Bollineni Hospital for better treatment. The bodies which were sent for post-mortem would be shifted to the victims’ village with police escort. He assured that the Collector and the SP would take all steps to ensure due medical care to the injured.
The SP after visiting the accident spot and elicited information. He said investigation into the mishap was on. The administration’s negligent attitude can be gauzed from the fact that the trauma care centre on the national highway launched by Union Minister Panabaka Lakshmi on January 22, 2007, is proving to be ineffective, as the funds released for it have not been utilised.

The condition of Reddy, three women and a child, undergoing treatment in the Kavali Government Hospital, was stated to be serious.
