Dispute over fish tank lease

Eluru (West Godavari): In spite of the repeated pleas for protection fearing attacks from their rivals, the police failed to extend protection to a group of Dalits from Chettunnapadu in Bhimadole mandal in the district resulting in the death of three and injuries to eight persons. According to the injured persons, the Dalits of Chettunnapadu have been cultivating 73 acres of land. The agriculture land was converted into a fish tank in 1992 and was given to the Scheduled Castes Fishermen Cooperative Society with 552 members for a lease amount of Rs 500 per acre. Five years ago, the lease amount had been enhanced to Rs 22,000 per acre.

Meanwhile, the leaseholders Mungara Venkateswara Rao and Achyuta Raju were asked by a section of members to pay the lease amount only to them. The trouble started after 217 members of the Society did not receive their share of the lease amount. The aggrieved members lodged a complaint with the police. DSP Rajani told the leaseholders to pay the amount to the society members but to no avail. Tension prevailed in the village and the Bhimadole police filed a bind over case against both the groups.

As part of the inquiry, the RDO asked both the groups to come to his office on Monday. One group of persons appealed to the DSP to give protection them. The DSP assured both the groups that justice would be done. The RDO conducted inquiry late in the night and asked them to go home.

On the way back to their village, trouble broke out. A group, which went ahead, waylaid and attacked the members of the other group. Netala Ranga Raju, 52, Bontu Jayaraju, 43, and Devadas Lalita, 60, and five others sustained serious injuries. The first three persons died while undergoing treatment at Eluru Government Hospital. One of the injured Bhogaiah was rushed to Guntur Government Hospital. Eluru Range DIG Vikram Singh Mann, SP Harikrishna, DSP M Rajani rushed to the spot. The village now wears a deserted look with many leaving the village fearing for their lives.
