Kakinada: In a bizarre development, the doctors at the Government General Hospital here treated a wrong patient for heart disease, resulting in her death. They mistook her for another patient who carries the same name.

A thoughtless act and negligence on their part allegedly resulted in interchange of the case sheets, which claimed a precious life.

According to relatives of the deceased, Madasu Satyavathi from Vetlapalem village in East Godavari district, she was admitted in the hospital three days ago as she had been suffering from typhoid.

However, another patient Madireddy Satyavathi was also admitted in the same ward for a different ailment. As Madasu Satyavathi was shifted to another ward on Tuesday night, the staff transferred along with her the other person’s case sheet mistakenly.

Around midnight on Tuesday, the doctors gave Madasu Satyavathi an injection, which was actually meant for Madireddy Satyavathi. After some time, the rate of heart-beat of the patient increased abnormally and when it was taken to the notice of the duty doctors and the staff, they did not respond, said her relatives, adding that after struggling for an hour, the patient died.

The interchange of case sheets came to light only when the duty nurse and the daughter of the deceased to sign on the case sheet. Shocked by the development, the daughter along with relatives staged protest at the hospital.

When accosted, the duty doctor Dr Harshavardhan reportedly did not respond properly, and the villagers along with the sarpanch and relatives sat on a dharna in front of the ward. Hospital superintendent Dr P V Buddha explained to them that even though there was an interchange of case sheets due to negligence of staff, no wrong medicine was administered. He told them that he would look into the case and take action if there was any wrong-doing. Following his assurance, the agitators relented. Later, Dr Buddha told media persons that he discussed the matter with the duty doctor and the head of medical department, and found no wrong treatment. He said a post-mortem would be conducted on the body, and a committee would go into the causes for death, and suggest action in case of any negligence.
