Hyderabad: With the theme ‘Inter-sectoral Approach to Promote Food & Nutrition Security,’ the 45th national conference of the Nutrition Society of India (NSI) began at National Institute of Nutrition, here on Thursday.
The two-day conference being attended by 1,200 delegates from different parts of the country focused the communication gap between various research programs being undertaken and awareness generation amongst the general public. ‘Food Security Bill’ and ‘FDI in Food Retail’ were two important subjects debated elaborately by the experts in this conference.
In his inaugural address, Dr V M Katoch, Secretary, Department of Health Research & Director-General, Indian Council of Medical Research, stressed the need for fighting the battle against various diseases on the field rather than simply debating and discussing in the rooms.
He held that professional bodies like NSI, which were responsible for upholding the ideal levels of nutrition amongst population, were expected to join hands with the government organisations in the war against diseases.
“In order to be a strong nation, we need to be secure in health parameters prioritising improvement of nutrition condition of the population along with food security measures,” he emphasised.
The president, NSI, Dr Anura V Kurpad, pointed out that anemia in mothers and low birth weight among the infants was major problems in India. He stressed on taking up education and extension of activities in a large-scale in the field of nutrition. “Education of population on dietary guidelines of NIN will surely help in this direction,” he noted.
Dr B Sesikeran, vice-president, Dr R Hemalatha, Joint Secretary, Dr Kalpagam Polasa, Director-In-charge, NIN, Dr Kamala Krishnaswamy, Dr V Prakash, former presidents of NSI also spoke on the occasion.
On second day, the conference will have ‘Young Scientists’ Awards, where junior awards in experimental nutrition will be given.
‘Scaling up Nutrition Interventions : Key Learnings and Challenges’ and ‘Exploring Food-Based Approaches for Translational Nutrition: From Research to Practice’ are two important lectures to be presented by Dr Sheila C Vir, Public Health Nutrition Consultant & Director, New Delhi and Prof Jamuna Prakash, Department of Food Science and Nutrition University of Mysore.
