Marri Shashidhar Reddy suggests increase of Assembly seats in T State

Hyderabad: National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) vice-chairman Marri Shashidhar Reddy on Saturday refuted the claim of Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and Seemandhra leaders, that naxalism and extremism in the State would increase if the State was bifurcated.

After a meeting with senior T Congress leaders, Reddy sent a note to GoM, urging it to recommend the Centre to increase the number of Assembly seats in new Telangana State. He suggested that the number of seats be increased to 153 from the 119.

The following are the key points in the note:

lBy increasing the number of Assembly seats, the apprehensions of some anti-Telangana people that only 119 MLA seats would lead to political instability to help increase the activities of Maoists.

lWhile the number of Lok Sabha seats cannot be changed. It is possible to increase the number of Assembly seats in a new State. Uttarakhand is a good example for this. Before the formation of this State there were only 25 Assembly seats in that region. The number was increased to 70 at the time of the formation of the Uttarakhand. A provision was inserted in the Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Act-2000 while carving Uttarakhand out of UP.

lAt present each Lok Sabha segment in Telangana has been divided into 7 Assembly constituencies. If each Lok Sabha seat is segregated into nine Assembly seats, than the total number of the Assembly constituencies in Telangana will go up to 153. A provision in this regard be incorporated in the T-Bill.
